Mindray Donates a New Operation Room to Operation Smile in Rondonia, Brazil to Expand Access to Life-Changing Surgeries

The inauguration for a new surgical room at Dr. Ary Pinheiro Base Hospital equipped by medical devices donated by Mindray was held on July 19, 2024 in Porto Velho, Rondonia, Brazil. The donation is facilitated by Operation Smile, an NGO devoting in providing care to cleft condition, which includes surgery, consultation, speech therapy and beyond.

This new facility marks a significant advancement in surgical capacity for cleft patients in the region, effectively doubling the number of life-changing surgeries.

The initiative has been made possible with support from the State Health Department of Rondonia, the Fissure Center of Rondonia (NUFIS), and the Fissure Association of Rondonia (ASFIR).

The recently donated devices, estimated to be valued at approximately USD 40,000, include an anesthesia machine, ventilator, surgical table, and light. These equipment meet the highest standards of quality and safety, and will help create a favorable environment for successful surgical procedures.

In Brazil, approximately 1 in every 650 births is affected by cleft conditions. Operation Smile has been active in Porto Velho, Rondonia, since 2014, providing 619 charitable surgical procedures and over 7,200 consultations to date. The expanded capabilities of this new facility will significantly benefit patients, particularly the approximately 50 cleft patients treated annually by NUFIS, which is expected to double to about 100 patients per year with the new surgical room.
