Safeguarding the Historical Moment in Paris

Passion for sports unites individuals, connecting enthusiasts and competitors in the excitement of the game and the acknowledgment of human power. With an estimated 17 million global visitors expected to gather in Paris, the city has been fully renovated to host the event for the third time in history.

Nevertheless, intense sports can bring more than just joy and excitement, significant risks of injuries are sometimes even life-threatening. For instance, at the XXIV Winter Olympic Games held in Beijing in 2022, medical staff reported 725 injuries and 1,119 illnesses, translating to approximately 24 injuries and 31 illnesses per 1,000 individuals, both athletes and non-athletes included [1]. Similarly, during the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games, medical teams recorded 1,035 injuries and 438 illnesses, which equates to about 9.1 injuries and 3.9 illnesses per 100 athletes over the course of the 17-day event.[2]? Therefore, emergency team plays an important role in safeguarding health of those at the event.

Event doctors are doctors who come from the emergency world and who will come to help at events. We need to respond not only to an emergency as we can do in hospital, but in a particular setting, where there is an event that will continue to take place and we need to be able, if possible, to treat people without interrupting the event, and if necessary, to allow them to return to the event.

Emergency Doctor and Director at ACESO

When I manage sporting events, the first group of patients are the athletes, as they are the most at risk. We practice extensively for their care. Next, we focus on the public, who form the second category of patients. Finally, we attend to the event staff, what we call the work force of the event, which can range from 50 to 300 people depending on the site and the sport.

Ensuring comprehensive medical coverage for such a diverse group requires strategic planning and seamless organization to meet the various medical needs that can arise. Hence, having the right medical equipment and trained personnel on-site is crucial to managing these emergencies effectively.

Kick-off the Game with Innovative Medical Solutions

In the thrilling arena of large-scale sports events, robust medical support is not just a necessity—it can be a game-changer. This summer, ACESO's team, equipped with Mindray devices, will be present at six venues, covering a range of sports from boxing to rowing to safeguard the wellbeing of the athletes, audiences and the game staff members.

Intense sports may potentially present a range of medical emergencies, from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions. Intensive competitions can lead to muscular problems and tendon issues, such as tendonitis, which can jeopardize an athlete's ability to continue competing. Weather conditions play a significant role as well, with extreme heat potentially causing heat strokes among participants.

The most serious pathology may be a cardiac arrest in an athlete, and it's not an uncommon occurrence. There are also some pathologies that older adults can have, such as heart attacks, that can happen too and require an immediate medical attention.

Dr. Mauro Coletta

Emergency doctor and Manager at MIP - SPORT ACESO

Given the high risk of cardiac events and other critical conditions at major sports events, having advanced medical equipment on-site is crucial. Dr. Mauro Coletta emphasizes the importance of swift action in such emergencies: "When we first arrive, we determine if the person is in cardiac arrest. We start the resuscitation maneuvers, like an external cardiac massage. Then we quickly apply the semi-automatic defibrillator patches, and then, there is an analysis."

?

With mindray’s innovative solution ranging from transport patient monitor, transport ventilator, defibrillator, as well as point of care ultrasound devices, the ACESO’s team are fully equipped for the challenging scenarios that could occur in the medical center of the game.

What’s essential for patient-centric emergency care solutions in such a great sport event?
  • Easy to carry and operate for quick response

The all-in-one integrated interface and the ultra-light weighted devices ranging from TV80 transport ventilator, BeneHeart D60 defibrillator, BeneVision N1 Patient Monitoring and Point of Care ultrasound devices like TE Air and TE9 makes on-site diagnosis easier. It is by integrating multiple diagnostic and analytical functions into compact devices that these advanced pre-hospital equipment enables rescuers to fully assess the patient's condition and get rid of huge uncertainties.

?

Despite the small size, TE Air delivers high-quality images with low power consumption for accurate decision-making, which allows emergency doctors to operate ultrasound diagnostics anywhere and anytime.

?

  • Efficient Modular for Seamless Transport

The TV80 transport ventilator addresses the limitations of separate equipment by seamlessly integrating Mindray's flagship BeneVision N1 patient monitor as a plug-and-play module. This allows for comprehensive patient status assessment and efficient device management in a single, integrated solution.

?

It also enables easy and effortless data transfer by directly plugging into the bedside BeneVision N series patient monitor, synchronizing the full patient data for both ventilation and monitoring during transport in a single step. This integration ensures uninterrupted data transmission, preventing delays and information gaps during patient admission, and enables a complete and smooth flow of the emergency response process.

Looking ahead, the future of sports medicine is full of potential and Mindray innovative medical technologies are at the forefront. According to Dr. Coletta, ultrasound technology, in particular, is proving to be revolutionary in the field. He describes it as the "stethoscope of the 21st century", as this versatile tool brings a wealth of information, applicable across a wide range of pathologies, including traumatic, cardiac, abdominal, and brain conditions. The ability to use ultrasound in various scenarios highlights the critical role of advanced medical devices in enhancing the diagnosis and treatment processes in sports medicine.
